UOXF – Partner’s Feature Presentation

UOXF – University of Oxford
The University of Oxford is consistently ranked amongst the top-ten research universities in the world. With substantial investment in physical climate science research, faculty, and infrastructure, the University employs over 180 staff and PhD students directly working within climate science. Oxford is also a world-leading centre for AI research. The Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics (AOPP) focuses on physical climate processes, combining traditional climate science approaches, such as modelling, theory, and observational analysis, with advanced artificial intelligence techniques.
What is your organization’s role in the project? What unique contribution does it bring to the team?
UOXF is heavily involved in the design of downstream applications as well as the implementation and validation of the Copernicus use cases. Specifically, Oxford leads the use case on climate and air pollution prediction from spatio-temporal observational constraints. The Oxford team brings world-class expertise at the intersection of atmospheric physics, climate modelling, and machine learning.
Why is this project important for your organization?
Embed2Scale allows the University of Oxford to push the boundaries of geospatial AI and physical climate science. By leveraging state-of-the-art AI compressors and compressed data representations (embeddings), Oxford can process and constrain high-dimensional atmospheric and Earth observation data far more efficiently. Participating in E2S provides Oxford with the opportunity to integrate novel AI technologies into climate and air pollution modelling, bridging the gap between massive observational datasets and operational climate science solutions.
