WWU – Partner’s Feature Presentation

WWU – University of Münster
The University of Münster is one of the largest universities in Germany, hosting over 45,000 students across 15 faculties and offering 280 degree programmes. Founded in 1994, the Institute for Geoinformatics provides world-class BSc, MSc, and PhD degree programmes in geoinformatics, spatial data science, and geospatial technologies. As a pioneer in cloud-based Earth Observation analytics, the institute initiated the H2020 openEO project, which established the openEO standardization for unified processing of big Earth data.
What is your organization’s role in the project? What unique contribution does it bring to the team?
The University of Münster is mainly involved in extending the openEO API to support AI-compressors and embedding workflow capabilities within standardized Earth Observation platforms. Leveraging its key role in the creation and governance of openEO, WWU brings foundational expertise in cloud processing standards and interoperability. In addition, the University of Münster actively contributes to the development and integration of the AI-compressor model and data repository, facilitating seamless access to compressed geospatial representations across diverse computing environments.
Why is this project important for your organization?
Embed2Scale allows the University of Münster to advance open standards in big Earth Observation data processing by directly integrating state-of-the-art AI compression and embeddings into cloud environments. By expanding the openEO API to handle compressed data models, WWU reinforces its commitment to open, interoperable geospatial technology while ensuring that modern AI-driven compression techniques become easily accessible to researchers, developers, and operational end-users worldwide.
