Embed2Scale to present on AI-Driven Data Compression at ESA-NASA Workshop

The Embed2Scale project will be actively participating in the ESA-NASA International Workshop on AI Foundation Model for Earth Observation, taking place in May 5-7, 2025, at ESA’s ESRIN in Frascati, Italy. The workshop will bring together experts from the European and international AI and EO communities to explore the advancements, challenges and real-world applications of AI-powered foundation models.

As part of the workshop, Embed2Scale will contribute with a 15’ presentation on “Transforming Earth Observation through AI-Driven Data Compression and Collaboration”, highlighting how AI-driven data compression techniques are transforming geospatial data processing. Embed2Scale’s presentation is part of the thematic session on “Embedding, Geospatial Semantic data mining and data volume reduction” scheduled for May 5, 2025. This session will feature six presentations, each followed by a Q&A discussion, fostering an interactive exchange of insights on how AI-driven techniques can optimize geospatial data processing and accessibility.

The E2S presentation will explore how AI-driven data compression techniques can transform the handling of geospatial data by significantly reducing its volume while maintaining its utility for downstream applications. This approach enhances data accessibility, scalability and efficiency across a wide range of EO use cases.
The work is a joint effort by Conrad M. Albrecht (German Aerospace Center), Edzer Pebesma (University of Münster), Gabriele Cavallaro (Forschungszentrum Jülich), Jan Dirk Wegner (University of Zurich), Matej Batič (Sinergise), Michele Lazzarini (SatCen), Philip Stier (University of Oxford), Thomas Brunschwiler (IBM Research).

Embed2Scale partners Thomas Brunschwiler and Gabriele Cavallaro are contributing their expertise as members of the Program Committee for this pivotal event. Additionally, members of Embed2Scale played a key role in the organization and execution of the hands-on sessions taking place on May 7, contributing to this collaborative workshop.

This participation reinforces Embed2Scale’s commitment to cutting-edge AI research and international collaboration in making Copernicus and EO data more efficient and widely usable. For more details, view the full ESA-NASA Workshop program here.
