Embed2Scale to launch the Earth2Vec Xchange session at ESA-NASA Workshop

The ESA-NASA International Workshop on AI Foundation Model for Earth Observation, taking place from 5–7 May 2025 at ESA’s ESRIN (Frascati, Italy), will feature a dedicated session initiated by Embed2Scale:

Earth2Vec Xchange: Embeddings for Earth Observation – Kick-Off Meeting

This session launches the Earth2Vec Xchange, a community-driven initiative dedicated to accelerating research and real-world applications of Earth Observation (EO) embeddings. Participants will review the current state-of-the-art in EO embeddings, including published embeddings, demonstrated applications, and emerging community activities. An ideation session will explore the transformative potential of embeddings, identify current limitations, and propose a collaborative roadmap for future developments. The session will also outline Earth2Vec’s supporting activities, such as knowledge exchange, embedding space exploration, benchmarking efforts, and moves toward community-wide alignment and standardization. Attendees will help shape the next steps for the Earth2Vec Xchange, contributing to building a dynamic, open ecosystem that enhances the role of embeddings in EO science and applications.

This interactive ideation session—moderated by Isabelle Wittmann (IBM Research Europe), Conrad Albrecht (DLR) and Thomas Brunschwiler (IBM Research Europe)—aims to officially launch the Earth2Vec Xchange, a new community-driven initiative focused on advancing the role of embeddings in Earth Observation (EO) science and applications.

The session will provide a platform to:

  • Review the state-of-the-art in EO embeddings
  • Explore published datasets and models
  • Identify limitations and new opportunities
  • Shape a roadmap for community alignment, benchmarking, and collaborative development

The session will be held on Tuesday, 6 May 2025 at 14:30–16:00 CEST, in Room 15111, Participants will help lay the groundwork for a shared embedding ecosystem through open dialogue and practical next steps. The session is part of the broader thematic stream on “Embedding, Geospatial Semantic Data Mining and Data Volume Reduction.”
