Embed2Scale to present Maritime Awareness Use Case at ESA’s Living Planet Symposium 2025

The Embed2Scale consortium is proud to announce its participation in the upcoming ESA Living Planet Symposium 2025, one of the world’s foremost events for Earth Observation research, taking place in Vienna, Austria, from 23–27 June 2025.

At the heart of the project’s presence is the session “EO-based Solutions to Address Civil Security-Related Scenarios” co-organised by SatCen and the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. This session aims at incentivizing the interest of the EO community in civil security-related activities through technical contributions based on Big Data analytics, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Data Fusion, Semantic Knowledge Graphs, Advanced Image Processing and other relevant technologies along the different steps of the data value chain.

As part of the session, partners from SatCen and DLR will present their work on the Embed2Scale maritime awareness use case, showcasing a joint contribution titled:

“Spaceborne SAR Compression with AI for Data-Efficient Vessel Detection”

This work explores an innovative AI-powered neural compression approach to enhance automatic ship detection using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. The presentation will demonstrate how deep learning techniques, within the Embed2Scale framework, can significantly reduce data volume while maintaining operational utility — a critical advancement for EO applications in maritime security.

In addition, Embed2Scale-related partners from Forschungszentrum Jülich and IBM Research will contribute to the symposium’s hands-on training activities. While these trainings are part of ESA’s FAST-EO initiative, they are directly aligned with the goals of Embed2Scale, further strengthening the project’s contributions to Earth Observation and AI integration.
